Parco Sempione Park in Milan

Parco Sempione is a city park located in the heart of Milan, Italy. This park was created in 1888 in order to provide green areas for the locals in the town negatively affected by rapid expansion and industrialization. Parco Sempione is named after Corso Sempione: Milan main roads that existed since the time of the Napoleonic Empire.

 

Parco Sempione close to 386,000 square meters in area, and it runs between two large buildings Milan: Castello Sforzesco on the one hand, and the arch Porta Sempione on the other side. Architect Emilio Aemagna designed Parco Sempione in a way that will provide a view of the two monuments.

Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) used to be the seat and residence of the Duchy of Milan, an ancient state that ruled northern Italy. Today, the Sforza Castle houses the city's museums, such as the Ancient and Applied Arts museum, and the Museum of Archaeology. When you enter the Parco Sempione, you can walk through the pages of the southeast corner of the Sforza Castle.

Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace) was built in the 19th century in the middle of Piazza Sempione, on the other side of the Parco Sempione across the Sforza Castle. Done in the style of neoclassical architecture, Peace Arch decorated with bas-reliefs, columns and statues depicting historical events of Italy and Europe.

Another important landmark of the Parco Sempione is the Arena Civica. Located in the northeastern part of the park, Civica Arena dates back to 1805, and was modeled after the Roman amphitheater. Today, Arena Civica is the main venue for sporting and cultural events held in Milan.

Parco Sempione also houses the Palazzo dell'Arte and Acquario Civico. Built in 1933, the Palazzo dell'Arrte now holds the city design museum, La Triennale di Milano, and Acquario Civico is a public aquarium. Built in an art nouveau building is beautiful, Acquario Civico completely renovated in 2006. Though not large, there are more than 150 different marine species represented there, free to visit.

On a sunny day in the Parco Sempione, be sure to climb the Torre Branca. At 108.6 m, panoramic iron tower is the fourth tallest structure in Milan. With a cloudless sky, you can get a great view of Milan, and also sight of snow peaks as far as the Alps and the Apennines.

 

Enjoy the monument while walking around in Parco Sempione, or just go there to relax. During evenings and weekends in summer, vast green lawn filled with people.
